Noted photographer Vivienne Maricevic grew up in Westchester County in New York. Vivienne used to go with her mother on Sundays to Times Square in New York City when she was a little girl. Maricevic got her first camera at age twenty from her twin brother after he returned home from Vietnam. A self-taught photographer, Vivienne took her first pictures in Bryant Park near Times Square and began photographing male nudes in the mid-1970's (her first male nude photos were of her boyfriend at that time). Maricevic went on to not only photograph transsexuals, male burlesque dancers, and live sex shows, but also various popular male and female adult film stars who include Vanessa del Rio, Kandi Barbour, Jerry Butler, Marc Stevens, Bobby Astyr, Candida Royalle, and Baby Doe. Her work has been published in several books as well as has been displayed in art galleries in such cities as Seattle, Munich, and New York City. Vivienne estimates that she has photographed close to one thousand men in the nude.

When I'm looking through my viewfinder at a man with an erection, I see his essence, his most powerful being. But he's also very vulnerable in that moment. It's a contradiction.
I'm the kind of person that, if I see a couple kissing in the park, would go around to get a better look.
[on photographing men in the nude] Men love the role reversal. They love the opportunity to be a sex object. I like helping them fulfill a sexual fantasy.
I was always attracted to people, places, and things that were different. That was the beginning of my photography.
I've always been attracted to the underbelly, the outcasts, of society. I like to befriend them and hear their story and make them feel like they have somebody that's listening to them, so that's what I did. I saw a bunch of homeless people in Bryant Park and I did some pictures of them, portraits of them sitting around.
