Biography

Matthew Plouffe is an American film producer and entertainment executive known for producing critically acclaimed independent films and major studio features. After establishing a foundation in creative development as an executive at Focus Features, Plouffe partnered with actor and producer Tobey Maguire in late 2011 to oversee all aspects of the production company Material Pictures. Under this banner, he spearheaded the development and production of a diverse slate of features, starting with a trio of back-to-back projects: the Bobby Fischer biographical drama Pawn Sacrifice (2014), Sony's science-fiction thriller The 5th Wave (2016), and the post-apocalyptic drama Z for Zachariah (2015).

In 2017, Plouffe expanded Material Pictures' footprint by launching a dedicated production-financing arm. This initiative allowed him to champion distinct, creator-driven projects from first-time feature directors, notably producing the Sundance Film Festival award-winner Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019) and the genre-bending British comedy Get Duked! (2019). His filmography continued to grow with impactful narrative dramas, including the historical drama The Best of Enemies (2019) and the indie thriller The Violent Heart (2020).

Plouffe's most high-profile producing credit came with the 1920s Hollywood epic Babylon (2022), directed by Academy Award-winner Damien Chazelle. The grand-scale Paramount Pictures production earned widespread recognition for its maximalist design and technical achievements, netting multiple Academy Award nominations and anchoring Plouffe's status as a major player in studio filmmaking. He is married to acclaimed Hollywood screenwriter Christina Hodson.
