- She was awarded the Alternative Nobel Prize of literature on 12 October 2018.
- She knew she wanted to be a writer after reading Emily Brontë's "Wuthering Heights" as a child. One of her novels, "Windward Heights," is a Caribbean re-imagining of "Wuthering Heights".
