After getting a BFA in Filmmaking from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Ruiz started working as a director for music videos and commercials. His short film Pelota de papel (1998) won the jury prize at the San Juan Cinemafest, Best Short Film at the Hamptons Film Festival, Best Short Film for the School of the Art Institute Fellowship and The Weisner Award for Distribution.
His debut feature film Lovesickness (2007) executive produced by Benicio Del Toro and starring Luis Guzmán won several international awards and was Puerto Rico's submission for Academy Award consideration.
In 2016 he directed the documentary De Puerto Rico para el Mundo (2016) narrating the history of the island's music, the artists who brought it to the mainstream and its contributions to the world.
His upcoming feature Summer of Three (2026) premiered at the Tribeca Festival and took home the Best Screenplay and Best Performance prizes.
