- Left-handed, power-hitting first baseman for the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, Brooklyn Dodgers and Boston Red Sox between 1933-1945. Best years were with the Dodgers, when he was twice named to the National League All-Star team and was voted the league's Most Valuable Player of 1941.
- In 1930 his brother Frankie Campbell, a prizefighter, died of injuries he received in the ring in a bout with heavyweight champion Max Baer.
- In 1965, he was a scout for the New York Yankees.
- Dolph's son, Doug Camilli, was also a baseball player. In 1962, Doug was a catcher with the Washington Senators.
- In 1993 he was inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame.
- Was inducted into the Dodgers Hall of Fame in 1984.
- Attended Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory in San Francisco.
