- TriviaIn 2010, she was defeated in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate by Tea Party-backed candidate Joe Miller. She launched a write-in campaign and won the election with 39% of the vote and became only the second U.S. senator in history to win election as a write-in candidate and defeat candidates with ballot access, after Strom Thurmond in 1954.
