  • Born to German immigrants and a native Philadelphian and graduate of Ephrata High School, she began competing in beauty pageants in the early 1950s and won the titles of "Miss Ephrata Fair and Tobacco Queen" (of Lancaster County) and both "Miss Pennsylvania AMVET" and "Miss National AMVET" before winning the crowns of "Miss Pennsylvania" in 1953 and "Miss America" in 1954.
  • Her competition in "Miss America" was the last held before the pageant became televised.
  • Husband Carl Sempier was a corporate businessman. They had two daughters. He died in 2007.
  • Remained active as a local beauty judge and went on to serve as a judge for the 1981 Miss America contest.
