Biography

Justin van der Lek is an award-winning Visual Effects Supervisor who recently was the production on-set visual effects supervisor and ILM associate visual effects supervisor on Lucasfilm's episodic series Ahsoka. In this capacity, Justin has closely collaborated with show creators Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni as well as director Rick Famuyiwa who has described Justin as a creative thinker and filmmaker.

Justin also served in a production supervisory role on the ground-breaking Star Wars TV series, The Book of Boba Fett and season three of The Mandalorian, overseeing ILM's StageCraft virtual production technology. His expertise in virtual production has led him to become a developer of techniques that have become industry standard. In 2022 he was a contributing writer to the Visual Effects Society: Handbook on Virtual Production, scheduled for publication in late summer of 2023, focusing on shooting in the volume.

Prior to rejoining ILM, Justin had built a broad background in games, environments and compositing at studios like, Guerrilla Games, Digital Domain and Weta Digital. Justin received the VES award for Outstanding Created Environment for the 'Falcon Chase and Graveyard' in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He also earned a VES nomination for Outstanding Compositing for the 'Barrel of Monkeys' work in Iron Man 3.

Justin was the On-set Visual Effects Supervisor on Marvel's Black Widow and has contributed to an array of action-packed features including Gemini Man, Avengers: Endgame, The Suicide Squad, and The Hobbit Saga.
