- Melisa Wallack is accused of being an AIDS denialist in an article in Vanity Fair by Peter Staley. He claims the original script she helped write for The Dallas Buyers Club movie included a lot of disproven AIDS denialist misinformation, inaccurate portrayals of the main character, and deeply homophobic framing of events. Peter Staley claims that once he brought this to the attention of the director of the film that director Jean-Marc Vallée, the other writer Craig Borten, and Peter Staley himself worked together to correct the script and took out almost everything that Melisa Wallack had written in the script. Many in the AIDS activism community don't believe she should be credited for the final script due to this.
- Wallack and her sister started a company in their home state of Minnesota that handled paperwork for large companies, and eventually, they moved to a new office in Los Angeles. She began meeting writers, decided to try doing a script herself, and her first successful one was _The Dallas Buyers Club (2013)_qv).
