Was a candidate for the Libertarian Party presidential nomination for the 2016 election. Despite having won several major endorsements from conservative leadership including Mary Matalin, Erick Erickson, and others, Petersen ultimately took second place to Governor Gary Johnson at the Libertarian National Convention.

Changed his party affiliation from Libertarian to Republican to run in the 2018 Missouri US Senate election. He ultimately lost the Republican primary, finishing third with 8% of the vote.
