Despite having won several major endorsements from conservative leadership including Mary Matalin, Erick Erickson, and others, Petersen ultimately took second place to Governor Gary Johnson at the Libertarian National Convention.
- Changed his party affiliation from Libertarian to Republican to run in the 2018 Missouri US Senate election. He ultimately lost the Republican primary, finishing third with 8% of the vote.
