Sanjay Jadhav is an Indian cinematographer, film director and producer who works primarily in Marathi cinema, with additional credits in Hindi film and television. He is best known as the director of Duniyadari (2013), while cinematography has remained the foundation of his career and the craft with which he most strongly identifies.

Jadhav grew up in Thane as the only child of Meena Jadhav, a teacher, and Shantaram Jadhav, a bank employee. A student at M.H. High School, he developed an early interest in theatre, performed in school and experimental productions, and spent much of his time around Gadkari Rangayatan. At his mother’s insistence, he completed his education in chemical engineering, but chose to pursue theatre and cinema instead of taking up a conventional engineering career. His wife, Promita, a childhood friend, supported his decision during the uncertain early years of his professional journey.

His entry into filmmaking began behind the scenes. After being advised that assistant direction would help him understand acting, performance and film production, he worked with director Kumar Sohoni on films including Aahuti and Anuradha. During another early assignment, watching a television cinematographer at work introduced him to the creative possibilities of the camera department and inspired him to pursue cinematography. His father helped him acquire his first camera, after which Jadhav studied photography and began learning the technical aspects of lighting and composition.

Jadhav subsequently spent six years working with cinematographer Naren Kondra on advertisements, corporate films and documentaries. He later joined Zee as an assistant cameraman and worked on studio programmes such as Philips Top Ten, Lux Kya Scene Hai, Hum Zameen and Dream Merchants. The demanding television schedule gave him extensive practical experience in lighting, framing and making quick visual decisions. After working on numerous pilot episodes and Hindi television productions, he gained wider recognition through the Marathi television series Abhalmaya. He also worked on the Hindi series Ek Mahal Ho Sapnon Ka and several other television projects before moving more extensively into feature films.

His early feature-film cinematography credits included Savarkhed: Ek Gaon, Saatchya Aat Gharat and Pak Pak Pakaak. Dombivli Fast became an important turning point, bringing wider recognition to his work as a director of photography. He subsequently photographed Marathi and Hindi films such as Jogwa, Mumbai Meri Jaan, C Kkompany, Khichdi: The Movie, Stand By, Chintoo and Aayna Ka Bayna. His official portfolio records cinematography honours for films including Savarkhed: Ek Gaon, Dombivli Fast and Jogwa.

After establishing himself as a cinematographer, Jadhav began developing stories of his own. During a rain interruption on an advertisement shoot, he drafted the screenplay that eventually became Checkmate (2008), his feature-film directorial debut. The crime thriller followed a group of men attempting to recover money lost through deception and introduced the visual energy that would become associated with his commercial filmmaking. He followed it with Ringa Ringa (2010) and then worked with Mahesh Manjrekar on the political action drama Fakta Ladh Mhana (2011), which became a commercial success.

The defining breakthrough of Jadhav’s directorial career came with Duniyadari (2013), adapted from Suhas Shirvalkar’s popular Marathi novel. Jadhav developed the screenplay through twelve drafts before making the film from its thirteenth version. Starring Swapnil Joshi, Ankush Chaudhari, Sai Tamhankar, Urmilla Kothare and Jitendra Joshi, the college-set drama explored friendship, romance, loyalty and the difficult choices faced by a group of young people. The film became one of the major Marathi box-office successes of its period and earned Jadhav several awards for direction. Its popularity established Duniyadari as the film most closely associated with his name.

Following Duniyadari, Jadhav continued to work across different genres. He directed Pyaar Vali Love Story (2014), a romantic drama set against communal tensions; Tu Hi Re (2015), a relationship drama about a marriage disrupted by the return of a former lover; and Guru (2016), an action drama starring Ankush Chaudhari and Urmilla Kothare. These films demonstrated his interest in combining mainstream entertainment with romance, family conflict, action and social themes.

He returned to ensemble comedy with Ye Re Ye Re Paisa (2018), which followed several characters caught in a series of misunderstandings while pursuing their personal ambitions. In 2019, he directed the youth-oriented romantic comedy Luckee and the family drama Khari Biscuit. The latter tells the story of a young blind girl and her devoted brother, who attempts to fulfil what appears to be an impossible wish. It was Jadhav’s first feature centered on children in the leading roles and represented a more intimate and emotionally restrained side of his filmmaking.

Jadhav expanded into digital entertainment with Anuradha (2021), his first web series as a director. Released on Planet Marathi, the seven-part psychological crime thriller starred Tejaswini Pandit, Sachit Patil, Sonali Khare and Sukanya Kulkarni Mone. He then wrote and directed Tamasha Live (2022), a musical drama about two television journalists competing for ratings, professional influence and public attention. He later returned to the comedy franchise with Yere Yere Paisa 3 (2025).
