Disgraced after begin caught in a November 2006 drugs-and-gay sex scandal that forced him to step down from his high-profile ministry as one of the most influential evangelical leaders in the nation.

Protesting he is not gay, he turned himself over to a team of counselors who are "assessing his spiritual, emotional and mental condition" and set out a rigorous "restoration plan" to help him overcome his personal demons. The team includes two veteran pastors who speak in tongues and Rev. H.B. London, who promotes therapy to help gays and lesbians change their sexual orientation.

Earned about $140,000 a year (not including donations) at New Life; his wife earned about $50,000 for her work with women's ministries.

Resigned from his powerful appointment as president of the National Association of Evangelicals, a post that kept him in frequent contact with the White House. He was also dismissed as senior pastor of New Life, the church he founded in his basement that grew to a congregation of 14,000.
