Biography

  • Astrid Whettnall is a multi-award-winning Belgian actress acclaimed for her deeply emotional performances and versatility on screen. She first gained recognition for her leading role in In the Name of the Son by Vincent Lannoo, which earned the Silver Méliès Award for Best European Film. Astrid went on to collaborate with celebrated directors including Costa-Gavras (three-time Academy Award winner), Xavier Giannoli, and Claude Lelouch (Academy Award winner). Her performance in Road to Istanbul, directed by three-time Oscar-nominated Rachid Bouchareb, marked a turning point in her career. The film premiered in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival, and her portrayal of a mother travelling to Syria to bring back her daughter from ISIS earned her the Magritte Award for Best Actress in 2016. She delivered another striking performance as Hélène in Tout Contre Elle by Gabriel Le Bomin, playing a woman who, following the death of her young lover, becomes the target of blackmail by her cleaning lady - a role once again praised by critics. In series, Astrid is widely known for her leading role in the acclaimed political drama Baron Noir (Canal+), directed by Ziad Doueiri, which received an International Emmy nomination. She recently reunited with Doueiri for the upcoming Netflix/BBC series The Family.
