- Spanish painter Remedios Varo was a major figure in the Surrealist school. A native of Catalonia, she fled Spain in 1937 when the fascist forces of Gen. Francisco Franco overthrew the elected Spanish government. She moved to Paris with her husband, French poet Benjamin Péret, and in 1940 moved again to Mexico, where she remained. She died in Mexico City in 1963.
