After completing school in Ziesar, he completed vocational training as a technical assistant for meteorology in Potsdam from 1987 to 1988. He then studied meteorology at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1988 to 1991. From 1991 onwards he majored in meteorology at the University of Hamburg. In 1995 he completed his diploma thesis on the subject of "simulation of volcanic eruptions" at the German Climate Computing Center. At the same time, he earned money as the weather presenter for the radio show "Antenne MV in Plate". In the same year, 1995, he made his TV debut as a presenter in the program "Das Wetter im Erste" at 7:50 p.m. From 1996 he also moderated the program "The Weather in the ARD morning magazine".

Karsten Schwanke became a reporter for various topics within the "ARD-Morgenmagazin" from 1997 onwards. He celebrated great success in 2002 with a report lasting several days, which was created during a Himalayan mountain climb and was broadcast live. During this time, Karsten Schwanke also appeared as the presenter of the ARD program "Chameleon" from 1996 to 2001. From 1999 to 2003 he moderated the program "Headball" and in 2001 "WissQuiz" on WDR. Meanwhile, he became one of the most popular television creators in the areas of knowledge and entertainment. After further formats for third party programs, Schwanke presented the scientific evenings "ARTE theme evenings" on ARTE from 2005 onwards.

On February 8, 2006, Karsten Schwanke took over the moderation of the science program "Abenteuer Wissen" on ZDF, succeeding Wolf von Lojewski, until 2011, which was awarded the Golden Camera in 2010. In 2011 he received the Universitas Prize for science journalism from the Hanns Martin Schleyer Foundation.

Karsten Schwanke has been married since 2003. In 2004, a daughter was born from this relationship.
