Biography

Charlie Wadhams

Biography

  • Charlie Wadhams quite possibly created a new category for the MTV Movie Awards when he wrote the song "Let's Duet" for the film "Walk Hard". Chat rooms and web pages are devoted to the thematic content of this song. According to fans "Let's Duet" may contain the most double entendres in a single song in the history of music. The song may also bring Charlie his first Oscar win.

How does a musician find himself here? For Charlie it began in Silver Lake with his band Rex Aquarium. They made a couple of albums, "Privacy" and "Back of the Room" (Sea Level Records) and played live on Danny Masterson's show on 103.1. Charlie's earlier albums contain a younger yet true voice, filtered through his signature Buddy Holly rock style. During this time Charlie also lent his drumming skills to local bands like The Unknowns, and Kennedy.

In 2006 Charlie started anew as a solo artist, playing in Los Angeles with various back up musicians. By chance producer and composer Michael Andrews ("Donnie Darko") saw Charlie on stage at Tangier in Los Feliz. Impressed by Charlie's "natural and earnest" sound and "abundance of charm" Andrews brought Charlie, bassist Gus Seyffert, and drummer Joey Waronker into his studio where he produced the tracks for "Free Up Your Schedule" (Elgin Park Recordings). The tunes incorporate Charlie's traditional lyrics and style with a 1970s Motown feel and a touch of steel guitar.

The evolution of Charlie's sound led to interesting opportunities in 2007. Charlie opened for eccentric singer/songwriter Daniel Johnston at the Henry Fonda Theater and toured with The Bird And The Bee. Charlie added the title of film songwriter when the director of "Walk Hard" asked him to pen the seemingly impossible; parody songs that were funny but real. He found a niche, and in "Walk Hard", rock star "Dewey Cox" (John C. Reilly) sings two of Charlie's songs, "Guilty as Charged" and the tune selected for nomination for Best Song in a Major Motion Picture by AMPAS, "Let's Duet". A well-constructed, melodic parody, "Let's Duet" is receiving critical acclaim as a top contender for the Oscar.

To date Charlie is finishing an EP with 4 new songs produced by bass player Gus Seyffert. Additionally Charlie is in pre production for a music video he conceived with actor and first time director Laura Prepon ("That 70's Show").
