Born in Chattanooga, he attended elementary school at Saint Nicholas School, moving to the McCallie School and the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, and graduating summa cum laude in English Literature; he was salutatorian and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Winner of the 2009 "Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography" for his book "American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House".

He is the son of Linda Jean (McBrayer) and Jere Ellis Meacham, who was a construction and labor relations executive. His paternal grandfather was attorney, judge, and fiction author Ellis Kirby Meacham. Part of his father's family was from Nova Scotia, Canada.
