Biography

Nathan Grubbs is an American filmmaker, actor, producer, and Crescent River Pilot whose work explores identity, moral ambiguity, and transformation through character-driven storytelling. He produced and starred in the independent boxing drama Brawler (2011), receiving a Story by credit, and later acted in, produced, and directed additional sequences for the short film Privateer, which screened at the 2009 Cannes Short Film Corner.

Grubbs made his feature directorial debut with Cowboy, directing, producing, and starring in the lead role from an original story he developed.

Born in New Orleans at Southern Baptist Hospital, Grubbs is the son of Jack Grubbs, a retired Crescent River Pilot, and Kathleen Troyer, a former secretary for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Introduced to cinema from an early age through films such as Rocky, Jaws, Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and television series including The Incredible Hulk and The Fall Guy, Grubbs was captivated by stories of ordinary people living extraordinary or double lives. As his interests evolved, he gravitated toward the character-driven American cinema of Mean Streets, Five Easy Pieces, Fat City, Tender Mercies, Bonnie and Clyde, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Their flawed protagonists, moral ambiguity, and emotional honesty continue to shape his voice as a filmmaker.

Outside filmmaking, Grubbs works as a Crescent River Pilot for the Port of New Orleans, guiding oceangoing vessels along the lower Mississippi River. He divides his time between New Orleans and California, where he has studied acting under renowned acting teacher Eric Morris. His experience navigating the Mississippi River and working alongside the people of New Orleans informs the authenticity, sense of place, and emotional perspective of his films.
