Jim McQuaid made 8mm and 16mm films while attending Cranbrook School in the Detroit area. He graduated from the University of Michigan, spent a year at the Maryland Institute, College of Art and then got an MFA in still photography. He taught photography and the history of photography at various universities, and ran an oral history project. He left the academic world to work in high tech, enjoying the opportunity to learn and write about the tech inside computers, inside DSP microprocessors and inside networks.
As digital video became affordable, Jim began to realize that telling stories about people was more fulfilling than telling stories about products. He left high tech to pursue filmmaking, focusing on short dramatic films about things that mattered to him, while doing a variety of commercial work to support his habit. Jim also enjoyed working for many other local indie filmmakers as DP and AD or even just as a kind of consulting producer. Jim is always willing to mentor and assist upcoming local film folks.
