- João Cândido Zacharias was born in Rio de Janeiro. He has a BA in Film from Universidade Federal Fluminense. As a screenwriter, he has worked with directors such as the Argentinian duo Mariano Cohn & Gastón Duprat in adapting their film 4 x 4 for a Brazilian version and writing a TV series for Star+; Portuguese directors Rita Nunes (in the script of her most recent feature, The Best of All Worlds) and Cláudia Varejão (as a consultant for her feature Wolf & Dog), among others.
In 2017, he wrote and directed the short film Sandra Calling, winner of the Felix Award at the Rio Film Festival and selected to festivals in Brazil, Europe and the US. His following short, The Last Romantics (2019), screened in over 35 film festivals around the globe. He has recently directed his first feature, the horror drama A Herança (Birthright), a co-production with Sony Pictures. The film is in final stages of post-production and is slated to premiere in the first semester of 2024.
His main focus of interest is genre cinema, ranging all scope from horror to thriller, action, crime and fantasy. As an LGBTQIAPN+ person, he is also very interested in portraying characters from that community and addressing, in cinematic and narrative ways, issues and themes regarding them.
