Fabian Hambüchen in Das Spiel beginnt! (2015)
Hambüchen discovered artistic gymnastics as a child. Since then he has been trained by his father Wolfgang Hambüchen. Meanwhile, he became a member of TSG Niedergirmes in the Hessian city of Wetzlar. His first international success was winning the 2002 European Youth Championships on parallel bars. In 2004 he became European Youth Champion on the three apparatus vault, floor and high bar and third in the all-around. During this time he had won several German championship titles. From the beginning of 2004, Hambüchen competed for KTV Straubenhardt in the 1st Bundesliga.

Hambüchen first gained popularity in 2004 when he became the youngest male participant for Germany at the Summer Olympics. He achieved eighth place with the German team in the team competition and qualified for the all-around final and the apparatus final on the horizontal bar. In the all-around final in 2004 he came 23rd. In the high bar final, Fabian Hambüchen showed an impressive flying part with extreme difficulty, which brought him 7th place. On December 11, 2005 he won the championship title with KTV Straubenhardt.

His first major international success was winning the European championship title on June 5, 2005 on the horizontal bar. At the 2006 World Championships in Aarhus he won the bronze medal in the all-around and the bronze medal on vault. He attended the Goetheschule in Wetzlar until he graduated from high school in the 2006/07 school year. The all-rounder became a star of the sport at the 2007 European Championships in Amsterdam. Hambüchen achieved silver in the all-around and two gold medals on the high bar. At the 2007 World Championships in Stuttgart he became world champion on the horizontal bar, making him the youngest German gold medalist at a world championship in this discipline.

In the all-around competition he achieved silver in the individual discipline, and in the team all-around competition he surprisingly won the bronze medal together with Thomas Andergassen, Robert Juckel, Philipp Boy, Eugen Spiridonov and Marcel Nguyen. By reaching the team finals, the team also managed to qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
