Biography

Adam Wimpenny is a London based director of award-winning films and BAFTA winning television. His work puts an emphasis on bold, stylish storytelling with cinematic visuals. Most recently, Adam directed series 1&2 of Hotel Portofino, a lavish 6 part 1920'S drama series for PBS and ITV, staring Natascha McElhone (Halo, The Crown, Californication), Anna Chancellor, (Four Wedding and a Funeral), Mark Umbers (Home Fires), and Adam James (Vigil).

Adam has made dramas for Sky and Showtime including Madonna & Basquiat, with Emmy and SGA winning writer Sarah Solemani, and the film Behold the Monkey. Shot in Spain and narrated by Tamsin Greig (Episodes), the comedy drama was nominated for Best Scripted Programme at the Broadcast Awards and sold to Showtime and Canal+. A former Screen International 'Star of Tomorrow', Adam's debut feature film Blackwood premiered at the London Film Festival. Empire magazine called it 'A classy debut, the British Sixth Sense'**** and Metro described it as "a classic English horror thriller with a killer ending." The film has been sold to Universal and BBC America.

Before moving into feature film, Adam directed an eclectic mix of popular television series encompassing drama, comedy and documentary; shooting hundreds of hours of television for the BBC, ITV, Sky and C4 that has been sold all over the world. His work includes BAFTA winning series The Revolution Will Be Televised for the BBC; two series of the hit crime series The Investigator for Netflix and ITV; and Derren Brown's flagship show Trick or Treat for C4. Adam is also used to working with high profile names such as Jack Whitehall, Jodie Whittaker, Simon Cowell, Bear Grylls, Sharon Horgan, Samuel L. Jackson and Ricky Gervais. Adam's short film ROAR starring Russell Tovey and Jodie Whittaker became part of the official selection at many of the world's highest profile festivals, and won major jury awards at both Aspen and Rhode Island. His follow-up short First Time was theatrically released through Lionsgate Films ahead of the Werner Herzog's movie The Bad Lieutenant.

He also directs commercials making campaigns for Sony, Cadbury's, Freeview, Rosetta Stone, Coca-Cola, Stoptober, Visit Britain and M&S. He is currently developing further feature films and scripted series to direct.
