Winner of twelve NY Emmy® Awards and a Student Academy Award® (Oscar), Carmen Vidal is a Spanish-American filmmaker and TV producer. Her work has been exhibited in international film festivals, as well as the United Nations, ARTE TV, PBS, LeMonde.fr, the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and Canal 22 (Mexico).
Carmen is the director of the documentary feature film EXILIOS (Mexico/Spain, 2020) about the lives of three exiles from the Spanish Civil War in Mexico. In 2019 she premiered her historical feature documentary RETRATS (Spain/Mexico 2019), co-directed with Yolanda Guasch. Other highlights of her work include the short films El Eclipse, Slate, and 6 a.m.
With and interest on social issues, Carmen works as a producer/editor of documentary shorts for the cultural magazine Nueva York and Latinas (CUNY TV), about Latinos in New York City. She is also the co-producer and cinematographer of the web-series for bilingual education Leyendo Libros (CUNY TV). For Le Monde, she co-directed the documentary short Tanzanie: un mariage entre femmes qui défie la tradition (2019).
As a director of photography, Carmen has specialized in documentary films, including "Bones of Contention" (Dir. Andrea Weiss, Premiered at the Berlinale Film Festival 2017), "Of Kites and Borders" (Dir. Yolanda Pividal, Winner of Best Documentary at the San Diego Film Festival, 2013), "Sloan at 75" (Dir. Lisa Beth Kovetz, 2011, winner of a Communicator Award), "U.N. Fever" (Dir. Andrea Weiss, 2007) and "Silences" (Dir. Octavio Warnock-Graham, 2006, winner of three College Emmy Awards).
Carmen has studied filmmaking in Barcelona, New York, Cuba, and Prague. She has taught as an adjunct professor at the MFA in Film Production at CCNY.
