1961 to 1965 studied English and history at the University of Frankfurt am Main.

1965 to 1974 teacher at the Friedrich Ebert School in Rüsselsheim.

1977 to 1979 Chairwoman of the "European Coordination Office of International Youth Associations".

1965 joined the SPD; 1974 to 1977 Federal Chairwoman of the Young Socialists; 1988 to 1999 district chairwoman of the South Hesse SPD, 1993 to 2005 deputy chairwoman of the federal SPD. 1968 to 1972 city councilor in Rüsselsheim. 1979 to 1987 Member of the European Parliament, member of the Foreign Trade Committee with a focus on foreign trade and European development policy.

Member of the Bundestag since 1987; 1987 to 1998 European policy spokesperson for the SPD parliamentary group, since October 27, 1998 Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development.
