He played in 106 matches for England and scored 29 goals. He also had a legitimate goal against Germany controversially ruled out in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2015 Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to Football in London, England.

He made 148 appearances for West Ham United, scoring 24 league goals, and 429 appearances for Chelsea FC, finishing as the club's top goalscorer with 211 goals in all competitions.
