His son, Owen Steen is autistic. He is named after Owen Hart.

Upon moving up to the main roster from NXT, Steen's first feud was against John Cena. When they were preparing promos, Kevin suggested to make it personal and mention the time he took his son to see John perform in Montreal and when the match finished and his son went to the guard rail to shake John's hand and was crushed when John just left not shaking anybody's hand. John felt tremendous guilt about what happened and Kevin tried to calm him down as it wasn't a big deal and just potential material. John asked Kevin to bring his son to WWE's performance centre where they were going to rehearse and John gave to Kevin's son a two-page letter personally hand-written. The interaction between the two remains Kevin's crowning moment as a father.

His first wrestling match was on his 16th birthday.
