Biography

As the son of a German mother and a Nigerian father, he grew up in Germany near Hamburg. His passion for football was awakened early on. Patrick Owomoyela made his debut in ice sports first at "Grün-Weiß Eimsbüttel" and later at the youth club "Union Stellingen 88". For the 1998/99 season he moved to the "Lüneburger SK" club. Here he initially shines as a powerful endurance athlete. He then made the jump to the regional league in 2001/02 by moving to "VfL Osnabrück". After one season, Patrick Owomoyela moved to "SC Paderborn" in the regional league in 2002/03, for whom he scored 4 goals in 23 games. In the 2003/04 season he made the jump to the 2nd Bundesliga by moving to "Arminia Bielefeld". Patrick Owomoyela was promoted to the 1st Bundesliga with "Arminia Bielefeld" in 2004/05.

In his first year, the midfielder scored 5 goals in 30 matches and became one of the most popular players in the league. On December 16, 2004, Patrick Owomoyela, who had also played basketball in the regional league until he was 18, celebrated his debut in the German national team in the Germany/Japan encounter in Yokohama. For the 2005/06 season he moved to Werder Bremen as a defender for 2 million euros. In the right wing position, he established himself as an excellent playmaker with impressive performance reserves. In the same year, Patrick Owomoyela, who has dual citizenship with Nigeria, was appointed by national coach Jürgen Klinsmann to the DFB squad of the German national team for the 2006 World Cup.

After the German national team won the World Cup on June 30, 2006 with a 5-3 victory. After reaching the semi-finals against Argentina, the team under captain Michael Ballack lost 0-2 goals in extra time against Italy on July 4, 2006. In the game for third place on July 8th in Stuttgart, the German team won 3-1 against Portugal. In August 2006, Federal President Horst Köhler awarded the German national team the "Silver Laurel Leaf", the highest award that Germany can give to athletes. In the 2008/09 season he moved to Borussia Dortmund. Here he became German champion in 2010/11 and 2011/12. His contract with BVB was not extended at the end of the 2012/13 season. From December 2013 he played in the second team (U-23) of Hamburger SV, where he ended his professional career at the end of the 2013/14 season.
