Biography

  • Maggie Contreras is a director and producer behind films tackling a wide range of topics, from a behind the scenes look at the lives of female orchestra conductors to standup comics to solar energy. One commonality they all possess is an insatiable curiosity about what drives the human spirit.

MAESTRA (2023), Maggie's directorial debut, follows five internationally-based women as they prepare for and perform in La Maestra, the only competition in the world for female orchestra conductors. Personal stories of survival, passion and perseverance are woven together with the drama and excitement of this one-of-a-kind event created to break yet another glass ceiling for women.

JONATHAN SCOTT'S POWER TRIP (PBS Independent Lens 2020) is the titular HGTV celebrity and activist's journey across the USA to examine the antiquated utility monopoly system and how solar holds the key to energy freedom.

In 2017 GILBERT premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was distributed by Gravitas Ventures with exclusive SVOD on Hulu.

Previously, Maggie was a producer co-running an independent production company which in addition to producing documentary features, created numerous short-form, non-fiction digital series and live action promos.

Maggie's early career began as a performer. Her background in storytelling comes from the theatre. She trained and worked in the London theatre scene before moving to Los Angeles where she appeared on various television series.

Maggie grew up with a foot in two distinctly different worlds. Her paternal grandparents are Mexican immigrants who settled in Tucson, Arizona where Maggie was born and raised, and she spent half of her childhood in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia where her mother is from.

As writer, Maggie sold a scripted series in the UK, co-written with Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes. She holds a degree from The George Washington University.
