José Oquendo was born on July 4, 1963 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico.

Signed by the New York Mets as an amateur free agent in 1979. Hit .256 with 14 home runs in 1190 games for the Mets and the St. Louis Cardinals. Played every position in his MLB career, including pitcher and catcher. Surname pronounced Oh-KEN-doe.
