Mini bio

  • David S. Cohen is Senior Producer for Variety Content Studio, the branded content unit of the "entertainment bible," Variety. Before taking this position, he was a reporter and editor for Variety for 14 years, winning two Los Angeles Press Club SoCal Journalism awards (one for print and another for video) and two Western Magazine Assn. "Maggie" Awards.. He is the author five books and a frequent speaker and moderator at conferences around the world,

Cohen began his career working in New York as an Off-Off-Broadway director, stage manager and casting assistant, before taking a job with the literary department for Agency for the Performing Arts. That led him to move to Los Angeles and join Wind Dancer Productions, the production company behind the hit sitcom "Home Improvement." He and a longtime friend, Martin Winer, wrote a spec "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" script that was bought by the producers.

A nearly random encounter led to Cohen getting an assignment to cover the film "Twister" for the South China Morning Post of Hong Kong. He became a freelancer reporter for many outlets, including Script Magazine, "Total Film" magazine, the Jerusalem Post and Variety, covering science, entertainment and more. Variety hired him in 2002, and he moved up from Copy Editor to Film Reporter to Features Editor to Digital Features Director and now Senior Producer for VCS. Over the course of his reporting for Variety he became a leading reporter on post-production and the visual effects industry.

In 2014 he launched the "Artisans" video series for Variety, which chronicled below-the-line and behind-the-scenes production. The series ran for 100 episodes, with Cohen serving as producer, writer and frequent host.

His articles for Script Magazine were the fodder for his first book: "Screen Plays." He's also the author of the official art-of/making-of books on "Pacific Rim," "Rango," "Terminator: Genisys" and the live-action "Ghost in the Shell," with more on the way.
