Ironically, despite holding animosity towards him, Greig was instrumental in on-boarding almost the entire full-strength West Indies team for Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket, his negotiations being directly with 4 of West Indies' most prominent stars namely skipper Clive Lloyd, pace legends Michael Holding and Andy Roberts and incumbent World Number 1 ranked batsman Vivian Richards.

His notorious "growel" remark against the West Indies in an interview before the home series in 1976-77 is widely considered the catalyst for West Indies rallying up as a team and enhance its 4 prong pace attack, a theory which helped it dominate the cricket world in both formats for 15 years.
