Born in Tehran, Safi Yazdanian studied cinema at the Tehran University of Art. In the late 1980s, he began his career as a film critic and essayist. He has written and translated books on Wim Wenders and Andrei Tarkovsky, and his selected essays on cinema and art were published in Iran under the title An Interpretation of Solitude. In 2021, he published Group Portrait with The Godfather: A Voyage into Coppola's Trilogy.
As a filmmaker, he started with short and documentary films. His first feature, What's the Time in Your World? (2014), received wide acclaim. In 2025, he completed his new documentary, Accents, filmed in Toronto, Canada.
