Andrés Escobar was a Colombian professional footballer who played as a centre-back. He was murdered on July 2, 1994, outside a Medellín nightclub following Colombia's elimination from the 1994 FIFA World Cup. The shooting was widely attributed to an own goal he scored in a 2-1 loss to the United States, which contributed to Colombia's early exit from the tournament.
