Biography

Tom began his career as a cinematographer in the South African film and television industry straight out of film school in 2003. With 21 local indie films and 9 TV series behind him, his first international production was Hunter Killer (2018) with frequent collaborator and fellow South African writer/director/producer Donovan Marsh. Tom lives in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Tom Marais, SASC, is an internationally recognized, South African cinematographer. After 22 in the industry, he still maintains his love affair with visual storytelling.

Tom is always up for a challenge and prides himself on being flexible. Part of his creative process is finding the right look and feel for each distinctive narrative, while working closely with the rest of the creative team, every step of the way.

With 23 feature films and 18 tc series under his belt, his body of work is available on Netflix, M-Net and Showmax. He collaborates frequently with director-writer Donovan Marsh (Hunter Killer, iNumberNumber), Quizzical Pictures (Reyka, Savage Beauty, Intersexions), Zee Ntuli (Hard To Get, Reyka) and Alex Yaxzbek (DAM)

Career highlights include collaborating with director Ciaran Donnelly, framing and lighting actors such as Gary Oldman, Common, Brendan Fraser, Gerard Butler, Kim Engelbrecht, Iain Glen, Elena Anaya, Linda Cardellini and Tom Welling. He also remembers filming the late Lucky Dube performing to a 100k+ crowd in Uganda, seeing the USS Texas Nuclear Submarine in the waters of Pearl Harbour, Hawaii and trekking with the Masai through rural Kenya on UN Documentary.

He resides in Johannesburg, South Africa, along with his toddler twins and commissioning executive wife, Lucia Meyer-Marais.
