Biography

Richard Plepler

Mini bio

  • Richard Plepler is the Founder and CEO of Eden Productions, a boutique film and television production company he launched in 2020. Shortly after its inception, Plepler signed a landmark five-year exclusive production deal with Apple TV+, where he has since executive produced acclaimed projects such as the limited series Black Bird, the documentary series Lincoln's Dilemma, and the historical drama Franklin starring Michael Douglas.

Plepler is most widely recognized for his transformative 28-year career at HBO, where he served as Chairman and CEO from 2013 to 2019. During his tenure, he was credited with ushering in a "second golden age" of television by greenlighting cultural phenomenons including Game of Thrones, Succession, Veep, Big Little Lies, and Silicon Valley. Under his leadership, HBO won more than 160 Emmy Awards and successfully transitioned into the digital era with the launch of the standalone streaming service, HBO Now.

Prior to becoming CEO, Plepler served as Co-President of HBO, where he reinvigorated the network's programming slate in partnership with Michael Lombardo. His career in media began in 1992 after a stint in Washington, D.C., working for Senator Christopher Dodd. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves on the board of the New York Public Library. In recognition of his industry impact, he has been inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame and the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame.
