Biography

Kitty Godfree, an English athlete, was a strong figure in women's tennis throughout the 1920s. She won two singles titles at Wimbledon's All-England Championships, five Grand Slam doubles titles, and five Olympic medals, including gold in women's doubles at the 1920 Antwerp Games.

Godfree lost the 1923 All-England final to Suzanne Lenglen of France, but returned the following year to become the only woman to defeat Helen Wills at Wimbledon. At the same competition, she won the mixed doubles title with Jack Gilbert. In 1926, she duplicated the feat, winning both the singles and mixed doubles, this time with her husband, Leslie Godfree. She won the US championships in both women's and mixed doubles. She represented England in the Wightman Cup series every year until 1934, when she retired after winning 46 singles and 107 doubles trophies in a 17-year career. Godfree was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1978. She was made a vice president of the All-England Club in 1989.
