He died on January 5, 2016 in Stockton, California, USA.

  • He died of congestive heart failure after his left ventricular assist device (LVAD) malfunctioned, in the night of January 5th, 2016, at his home in Stockton, CA. He was found by his wife, Alberta. Caldwell had heart problems in the past and had a pacemaker inserted in 2014, and also LVAD (at Stanford University Hospital) the same month he died.
  • He was an original member of R&B group The Whispers, which began as a five-member group in 1963. The other original members were twin brothers Walter and Wallace Scott, Marcus Hutson, and Gordy Harmon. Their biggest hits include "Rock Steady" and "It Just Gets Better With Time".
