- Born in Malaysia, Gilbert immigrated to Kansas City, Missouri, before making Los Angeles, California, his home. He is a writer, director and producer, known for Virginia (2005), Obama for America: Bill's small Business Loan (2012) and The Lonely Planet (2017). At the age of 27, Gilbert took the directorial reins for his second feature, Wubetin Felega (2008). He also directed promotional work for a Richard Branson-hosted fundraising dinner supporting disaster relief and the National Tennis Foundation. Gilbert has collaborated with supermodels Coco Rocha and Behati Prinsloo on projects benefiting Haitian orphanages.
