Biography

Du Jie is a Chinese cinematographer and filmmaker based in Japan. He worked for many years as a director of photography in China's commercial film industry, with credits including the Detective Chinatown franchise and Moon Man, films with a combined worldwide box office of nearly $3 billion. He is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) and the China Society of Cinematographers (CNSC).

Du relocated to Japan in 2020. A few years later, he self-financed his directorial debut, The Height of the Coconut Trees, made with a small local crew. The film premiered in the New Currents competition at the Busan International Film Festival, and screened in the "Made in Japan" section of Tokyo Filmex and in New York's New Directors/New Films.

(2026) Du is preparing Limbo, the second installment of a planned four-part film project, with production set to begin in Japan and on the Tibetan Plateau in October.
