- He received a bachelor's degree in history from what is now Eastern University in St. Davids, Pennsylvania. He received a bachelor of divinity degree and a master of theology degree, both from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (now Palmer Theological Seminary). He received a PhD in sociology from Temple University. He taught sociology at Eastern University for 48 years, after which he remained an adjunct professor.
