Biography

Gerard Mortier was born on November 24, 1943 in Gent, Belgium. He was a director, known for Great Performances (1971), Cyrano de Bergerac (2012) and Tribute to Jerome Robbins (2012). He died on March 8, 2014 in Brussels, Belgium.

He said he acquired his taste for controversy at a Jesuit boarding school, where students were assigned works by iconoclastic writers like Marx, Nietzsche, Ibsen, and Sartre.

He had graduate degrees in law and communications.

His parents owned a bakery.
