Biography

Harold Ellis was born on January 13, 1926 in London, England, UK. He was married to Wendy Mae Levine. He died on March 25, 2026 in London, England, UK.

Qualified in medicine at Oxford in 1948, the year the NHS was founded, and held junior posts in Oxford, Sheffield and London before his appointment to his consultant post.

Awarded a CBE in 1987.

Former professor of surgery at Westminster Medical School from 1962 to 1989.

Also holds numerous Honorary Degrees and Fellowships, from the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists, the RSM, the Sri Lanka College of Surgeons, l'Academie de Chirurgie (Paris), and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem - to name a few. He is also an Honorary Fellow of several international Associations of Surgeons, including those of the Netherlands, India, Greece, France and Israel.

Parents were Polish Jews: a barber and a dressmaker.
