- Antonio Zavaleta is known for El Mercado Sonora: A Traditional Healer's Market (2000), Spirit Doctors (1996) and Taboo (2002).
- He is the Vice President of External Affairs at the University of Texas at Brownsville. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from UT Austin where he studied under the famous folklorist Americo Paredes. Zavaleta continues to study the folk religions of Mexico and the borderlands. He is also the founder of the "Nino Fidencio Research Project."
