Biography

He was a U.N. diplomat whose negotiations helped resolve some of the worst international crises of the 1980s and 1990s, including the Iran-Iraq war and the kidnappings of Westerners, including Terry Anderson, by Hezbollah in Lebanon.

He studied political science at the University of Padua, the University of California at Santa Barbara, and the universities of Prague and Amsterdam.
