- Was a lifelong friend of Met teammate Cleon Jones. Tommie was a year ahead of Jones in school even though Cleon was five days older.
- Played a key role during the Mets' miracle year of 1969. Made two spectacular catches in Game 3 of the 1969 World Series, preserving a 5-0 Met victory and robbing the Baltimore Orioles of up to five runs.
- Suffered through a miserable 1968 season after being beaned by Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals on the first pitch of the first exhibition game. Had an 0 for 34 slump at the plate at one point and wound up with a .217 batting average for the year. Recovered in 1969 by hitting .271 with 26 home runs and 76 runs batted in. Had two more productive years in 1970 and 1971 before tailing off in 1972.

- Acquired by the New York Mets along with infielder Al Weis from the Chicago White Sox on December 15, 1967 for outfielder Tommy Davis, pitchers Jack Fisher and Billy Wynne and minor league catcher Buddy Booker. Traded by the Mets to the Houston Astros on November 27, 1972 for outfielder Rich Chiles and pitcher Buddy Harris.
