Biography

Craig Renaud

Biography

  • Craig Renaud is an Oscar nominated director, and a Peabody and DuPont Columbia Award winner.

Craig and his late Brent Renaud got their start working with legendary filmmaker Jon Alpert at the Downtown Community TV Center in NYC. For over twenty years, the brothers have directed films for HBO, PBS, NBC, VICE, Discovery, and The New York Times. Renaud is known for deeply immersive documentaries that span from domestic rural poverty to international conflict zones. Beyond hard hitting journalism, he has followed civil rights leaders, songwriting legends, and the most prolific writers in contemporary literature. He has explored college football for ESPN, and produced deeply empathetic work on immigration, addiction, youth homelessness, and mental illness.

Among his most celebrated work is the Oscar nominated film Armed Only With A Camera. His series Last Chance High, won a Peabody for its compassionate look inside a Chicago therapeutic school. His gripping feature Dope Sick Love is widely cited by critics as one of the best documentaries in HBO's history, while his ten-part series Off to War made filmmaking history as the first documentary to embed with a military unit for an entire combat deployment.

Following the tragic loss of Brent, who was the first American journalist killed in Ukraine, Craig continues their impactful filmmaking. He is in production on the highly anticipated second season of PBS's Southern Storytellers. He is also co writing a Hollywood feature film script with director Jay Russell based on the brothers lives. To continue Brent’s legacy, the family established the Brent Renaud Foundation to support emerging filmmakers and journalists.
