John Martin is a documentary filmmaker, director and producer based in Vancouver, Canada, originally from Cape Town, South Africa. His work spans documentary film, corporate production, travel film and live streaming, with a focus on character-driven observational storytelling across four continents.
His documentary Under the Ice (2026) follows South African freediver Amber Fillary's Guinness World Record ice swim in Norway and the two-year personal journey of depression, failure and recovery that surrounds it. The film is on the international festival circuit.
Martin is an affiliate member of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers, a member of the International Documentary Association, Film Independent, the Documentary Organization of Canada, and the Documentary Filmmakers Association. He holds Transport Canada Advanced and EASA European drone licenses and operates Sony Cinema Line cameras and DJI cinema drones. Martin Media is based in Vancouver, British Columbia.
