Betty M. Garcia

Betty Marisol García is a Dominican-American writer, director, and producer whose work explores themes of resilience, identity, and human connection. Her debut feature film, The Dance of the Butterflies is a poetic, character-driven drama set in Washington Heights that centers on the unlikely friendship between a young Dominican single mother and an older widow and former dancer. Her acclaimed short films (Intruder, Firecracker, Lola) have screened at prestigious festivals including HBO's New York Latino Film Festival, the London Film Festival, and the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana. Born in Brooklyn, García spent her formative years in the Dominican Republic before returning to New York as a teenager, drawing on this bi-cultural experience to craft emotionally resonant stories grounded in truth and nuance. She is an IFP Project Involve Fellow, a former Diversity Chair of NALIP NY, and holds an MA in Film & Media Studies from The New School. Her work reflects a deep belief in cinema's power to illuminate inner lives and foster empathy across cultures.
