- Elgar Howarth was born on November 4, 1935 in Cannock, Staffordshire, UK. He is known for 200 Motels (1971), The South Bank Show (1978) and Play Away (1971). He died on January 13, 2025.
- Also uses the pseudonym W Hogarth Lear (an anagram of his real name).
- A member of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, he later went on to enjoy a celebrated association with Grimethorpe Colliery Band.

Together they formed New Music Manchester, a group dedicated to the performance of new music.
