- He was a lawyer who prosecuted organized-crime cases in the Justice Department during the Kennedy administration. He was also an author who wrote about prison reform and farm labor rights, among other topics. At Syracuse University, he was in a law-school-track program, receiving a law degree in 1956. After serving in the Air Force JAG Corps for three years, he attended Yale Law School for advanced legal degrees.
